Avoiding Phone Scams Many fraudsters rely on telemarketing and impersonation to gather account numbers or other sensitive information by phone. • Don’t answer phone calls from unknown numbers. If you do answer, hang up immediately. Most importantly, don’t answer any questions, including “yes” or “no.” • Never give out sensitive information to an unverified person who contacts you. No legitimate government agency, vendor or organization will request this information over the phone and would require some sort of written communication. Research the organization’s authenticity if you are uncertain about their requests. • Beware of phone calls from distant family members in distress. Some fraudsters will contact a person saying they are a distant family member in need of money. Find out who you are speaking with by asking specific questions only that person would know. • Most mobile devices can block unknown numbers, cutting down unwanted phone calls by sending them straight to voicemail. • Download and install a third-party app to block scam calls. Avoiding Online Scams • Avoid phishing scams by keeping a healthy skepticism of all incoming email, even those that claim to be from your financial institution. • Never open a link in a suspicious email. • Fraudsters will use urgent pop-up messages or online ads to promote fake antivirus or malicious software (malware). Clicking the link triggers the malware to install and immediately begins searching your device for personal information, destroying files and can lock you out of your device, among other issues. • Bogus shopping websites will advertise incredible deals on expensive items. Be sure to research a website before making any online purchases. • Fraudsters will use social media to live behind a fake identity. Never give out sensitive information or money to someone you don’t know personally. SAMPLE
