General Information

Security

By following our tips, Online Banking with HVFCU can be a safe and efficient method for handling your banking needs. For additional security tips, visit hvfcu.org. User Identification and Password Security starts at your computer. To make your passwords hard to guess, avoid using your pet’s name, hometown, or other personally identifiable choices and combine random numbers instead of using your birth date. Secure Sockets Layer Encryption We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, a trusted method for securing internet transactions. This technology scrambles data as it travels between your computer and HVFCU, making it difficult for anyone to access your account information. Secure Access Code You need a Secure Access Code to access your accounts when you log in to Online Banking with HVFCU for the first time or the first time from any new device. This code is delivered to you via email, phone call, or SMS text message. You can opt to register your device so that you do not have to complete the Secure Access Code process the next time that you access HVFCU’s Online Banking system from that same device. If you delete the security certificate or “cookie” that recognizes your device as previously registered, you will need to receive another code to register your device again. The cookie will expire after one year so this process must be repeated at least once per year per device. For added security you may choose to NOT remember your device and will need to receive the access code for each login on that device.

Note : If you have Short Code messages disabled on your phone, your Secure Access Codes may not be received.

Online Banking Safety Tips: • Make sure your computer’s operating system is up to date with security updates and you are running and updating your anti-virus software. Also ensure you are running a current version of your web browser software and that it is updated regularly. Click here for the most current list of supported browsers. • Choose passwords that will be easy for you to remember yet hard for others to guess. Don’t use personal information (like a street address) or public information (like your school’s mascot). Many people use password managers on their computer and phones to help them with this task. • When you’re done with your Internet Banking session log out of the website and completely close your browser to ensure that all confidential login information is removed from the computer’s memory. • Do not leave your computer unattended when logged in to Online Banking. • Do not access Online Banking on public computers or unsecured Wifi networks. • If you receive an error when logged in to your account, report the error to a representative at 845-463-3011.

General Information

Security

HVFCU will never send unsolicited emails asking you to provide, update, or verify personal or confidential information via return email. If you receive an alleged email inquiry from HVFCU, please report the incident to a contact service representative as quickly as possible. To reduce the risk of online fraud and identity theft, your first and best protection is awareness. Phishing Phishing is when criminals pose as a legitimate person or organization such as the IRS, your credit union or credit card company and try to convince you to disclose sensitive personal information or open a malicious email attached on your computer. Because criminals can easily copy the graphics from the real organization’s website, simply having the email look legitimate doesn’t mean it is. Remember that the real organization won’t ask you for your account or personal information because they already have it. If the request seems suspicious, log on directly to your institution’s website without using any links in the email or call the institution directly to ask if the email is indeed legitimate. Identity Theft Identity Theft is when criminals obtain enough or your personal information to be able to take out new loans or lines of credit in your name or user your existing lines of credit to make fraudulent purchases. To help guard against this you should check your accounts frequently and take advantage of the free credit reports available from the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and Transunion) once each year. You can choode to view all three bureau reports at the same time, one time per year, or view one bureau report every three to four months to spread out your reviewing per the year. More information is available at https://www.annualcreditreport.com. Logging Off As a secure practice, you should log off of your Online Banking session before you close the browser window or anytime you walk away from your computer. Additionally, HVFCU will log you off automatically due to inactivity or when your HVFCU session reaches the maximum time limit.

Fraud Prevention Tips: • Do not open email attachments or click on links from unsolicited sources. • Avoid completing email forms or responding to messages that ask for personal or financial information. Do not trust an email asking you to use a link for verification of login or account details. • Monitor your account transactions for unauthorized use. • Shred old financial information, invoices, charge receipts, checks, unwanted pre-approved credit offers, and expired charge cards before disposing of them. • Contact the sender by phone if you are suspicious of an email attachment.
